Education Room at the North Midlands Centre


National Parks and Wildlife Service, North Midlands Region, Education Service includes the following:

(i) Primary Schools Programme: Outreach, Discover Primary Science & Maths, Site Visits, and Nature Day at North Midlands Education Centre. See below for a typical Primary School Programme Day:

  • Outreach: The school grounds are utilised to deliver the field study element of each programme. An Education Officer travels to the school to deliver the selected programmes - one in the morning from 11am until 12.30pm and the second programme is delivered to another class or group from 1.00pm – 2.30pm.
  • Site Visit: This option is a day long programme, typically starting at 11.15 am and finishing at 2.30pm. The School class or group will travel to a selected site (woodland, bogland , hedgerow, etc.) and take part in a field study.
  • Discover Primary Science & Maths: Schools can select an education programme from a set of programmes that have been specifically designed to link to the SESE curriculum as well as the aims and objectives of the Discover Primary science Programme and those of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. This programme can be delivered at the school or at the North Midlands Education Centre.
  • Nature Day at North Midlands Education Centre: This option is a day long programme, run in Ballinafad. It entails a themed nature day at our Centre, where a variety of nature awareness activities can be carried out, such as bird watching, pond dipping, mini-beast hunting, and arts and crafts.


(ii) Secondary Schools Programme: Study and survey of an ecosystem as per curriculum requirements.

(iii) Third Level Programme: Study and survey of an ecosystem

Education staff from the North Midlands Education Office also work in association with other sections of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht as well as a wide range of other government departments, NGO's, etc.
